Active Ingredient

Origin

Pelargonic acid is the active ingredient of Finalsan®. Pelargonic acid is also known as nonanoic acid and belongs to the fatty acid family. Usually it´s commonly found in natural oil and in pelargonium (geranium) plants.

Mode of Action

Finalsan® is a non-selective contact herbicide. The active ingredient of Finalsan®, pelargonic acid, penetrates the wax layer (cuticle, bloom) of the leaf. After that the lipophile portion of the fatty acid ultimately destroys the plants epidermis cell membranes. This causes a fast release of cell material so that the plant dries up quickly.

Finalsan against weeds

Action Spectrum

Finalsan® works against mono- and dicotyledonous weeds, for example dandelion, types of plantain, grass, bindweed/ creeping jenny, nettle and thistle.

Finalsan® is also effective against the leaves of goutweed and common horse-tail.

Finalsan® can also be used against moss and algae. Many different types of moss and algae can be controlled sustainably by Finalsan®.

Efficacy

Plants treated with Finalsan® will turn brown within hours. This effect is apparent by mono- and dicotyledonous weeds.

Non-Cropland/Permission Sensitive Areas

The permission to use herbicides in noncropland areas is in several countries dependent upon local plant protection laws.
Due to its favourable environmental properties, Finalsan® is the product which many authorities prefer to approve. Details relating to permission for application should be obtained from the proper plant protection authorities.

Application notice

Thoroughly wet all weeds

Finalsan® is applied by spraying. Only the weeds that come into direct contact with the spray will die, this is why complete saturation of the weed is important. Weeds should be dry before spraying otherwise a thinning effect of the active ingredient can occur.

Application temperature / choice of spray nozzle

Finalsan® is effective at temperatures of 10 °C upwards. The effect does not depend on metabolic processes in the plants. Finalsan® can therefore be used successfully from early Spring until late Autumn.
We recommend using it at temperatures below 25 °C to minimize the effect of odours coming from the active agent. We also recommend using a coarse droplet nozzle when spraying.

Repeat Applications

When spraying against root-stock weeds, a second treatment 4 to 6 six weeks after the initial spraying is recommended.

Use on paved areas

Finalsan® has proved its worth in fighting moss and algae on paved areas quickly and with lasting effect. The active agent, pelargonic acid, destroys moss and algae tissue quickly and sustainably. As a result it is months before such areas are attacked again by algae and moss.
On the one hand this reduces the danger of slipping on paved areas. On the other it also curbs the breeding of fungus gnats and swamp flies which like to lay their eggs under layers of algae.
The active agent is quickly dissipated on the paved areas with the result that pots or containers can be returned shortly after treatment has finished.

Secondary effect against fungal pests

Tests conducted by Niedersachsen's Chamber of Agriculture show that when Finalsan® is used to combat moss and algae with ribbon tissue on paved areas, a marked reduction can be observed in the level of infestation from various fungal pests. It was discovered that the potential for infection from pests of great significance to tree nurseries and ornamental plant operations such as rhizoctonia solani, phytophthora cinnamomi and cylindrocladium buxicola can be kept severely in check. The trials showed that the tissue can be penetrated well by using high levels of water of up to 2,000 litres thereby increasing the effectiveness.

Plant Tolerance

Finalsan® is a total herbicide that kills any green portions of plants. Therefore it´s important that the leaves of crop plants do not come into contact with Finalsan®.
Because Finalsan® doesn’t harm the woody portions of plants, it can easily be applied under trees and shrubs. Deposition of the active ingredient will not occur on green or brown bark portions of trees and shrubs. Finalsan® is not absorbed by the roots of the plants.

Material Tolerance

Finalsan® has a good material-compatibility rating.In certain individual cases, whitish coatings can form on dark materials; however, these dissolve quickly after a rainfall. Avoid contact with artificial-resin panels and surfaces containing copper or zinc. Contact with these materials can lead to longer-term discolouration. For other sensitive materials, always test the compatibility in a spot which is not readily visible.

Miscibility

Finalsan® can be mixed with herbicides containing glyphosate. The two agents complement each other in their potency.

Data on environmental compatibility

Bodies of water
No requirements to be met on distance from bodies of water. Pay attention to any state regulations. Use of the agent in or directly beside above-ground bodies of water or coastal waters is not permitted. Harmful to aquatic organisms (R52). Finalsan® is degraded within a few days in waters. After 1 day 50% of the active ingredient has been degraded.
Soil
Finalsan® is quickly degraded in soil. After 3 days 50% of the active ingredient has been degraded.
Beneficial insects
Not harmful to beneficial organisms.
Bees
Not harmful to bees (B4).
Pets
Pets can go onto treated areas as soon as the surface is dry.
